The conflict between Russia and Georgia has highlighted the Caucasus region's fragility as an energy transit zone.

But Georgia's pipelines are highly prized by the European Union as a way of reducing dependence on Russian oil and gas.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said moral support is not enough after Russian troops retook the capital of South Ossetia.

Russia snubbed calls for a ceasefire, and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin criticized the United States, saying Washington was mistaking the aggressors for victims.
